Well made stone. Good quality. The flattening stone was a welcome bonus. The 3000 grit side is perfect for initial sharpening. A caution on the 8000 grit side - It is not remotely close to 8000 grit. It seemed closer to 4000 grit of a quality Japanese whetstone. I purchased a 6000 grit King S1 stone for final polishing. Stay away from the cheaper King 1000/6000 KW65 combination whetstone. That seems to use plastic binder which literally permanently clogs the 6000 grit side.
Also natural stones have a random grit size that gives a long lasting edge. Basically the random grits create varying sizes of micro-serration in the blade that wear down at a different rate, therefore longer edge retention. I'm a novice knife sharpener. I've had to unlearn what my grandpa taught me in order to use these. So far, I've had decent but mixed results. I've switched to my cheap 200/400-ish cheap tool stone from harbor freight for cutting a bevel when the blade has either been damaged or did not have a proper bevel. The 400/1000 grit stone in this kit is soft. Very soft. I have bowled it out several times. It makes keeping a steady angle difficult. But these stones at this price point are meant for learning, and for that they serve their purpose.

The only secret with ceramic stones is that you should take maintenance seriously else they will wear before they are due. The other beauty of these stones is that they need no lubrication you can use them dry. They will give you a very sharp and fine blade after which you need to scrub them to remove the metal particles. Ceramic stones are very hard which means that they can remain flat for decades. The downside to ceramic stones is that they only provide you with fine grit and if it falls, it breaks easily into pieces.
I purchased this set as a gift to myself and my wife we both love to cook . Oil Stones differ from water stones in that they require the use of honing oil to float the swarf (metal particles). Also, these stones are commonly made from one of three different materials consisting of Novaculite, Aluminum Oxide (Corundum), or Silicon Carbide (Carborundum) and they all use oil to lubricate the stone and suspend the swarf in order to prevent the stone from becoming clogged.
