I really liked this whetstone! I had a Smith's pocket sharpener that could get my knife sharp enough for working around in the yard (I have an Opinel no.8). However, in doing a little research I found that the sharpener was only around 600 grit on the finest setting. So this BearMoo 1000/4000 grit looked like the perfect step up, and it turned out to be the perfect stone for me. The pictures are an accurate representation of what you get. The removable rubber base was helpful when switching from one side to the next, and it kept the stone from sliding around. The instructions say that the stone can work with either water or oil, but that water is preferred. It said to leave the stone soaking in water for five minutes, and the stone worked like a champ. I especially liked how the instructions gave you an approximate time of how long the stone takes to sharpen a knife -- it just helped give me an idea that it would take about 15-20 minutes on the 1000 grit side, and then another 10-15 minutes on the 4000 grit. The DMTs are on their own scale, since they rate by "Coarse" "Fine" etc. They give micron sizes in their sales literature, so I've added a column for them. Ceramic whetstones are meant to be used without water or oil, which means they can be used almost anywhere and are ideal for chefs or cooks who have limited working spaces. They will give you a very sharp blade and as their surface is very hard they will maintain their flat surfaces over the long-term, but as they have a fine grit, they can break if you drop the stone.
Manufacturer contacted and sent a new one for replacement. Great customer service but replacement item was nicked on the corner. It was still usable so i didn't bother to ask for another replacement. I would recommend item to be shipped in another box instead of an over-sized yellow envelop which is not adequate protection. Item sharpen my knife pretty good though..

One of the most well-regarded natural whetstones is the yellow-gray "Belgian Coticule", which has been legendary for the edge it can give to blades since Roman times, and has been quarried for centuries from the Ardennes. The slightly coarser and more plentiful "Belgian Blue" whetstone is found naturally with the yellow coticule in adjacent strata; hence two-sided whetstones are available, with a naturally occurring seam between the yellow and blue layers. So my advice, along with all the other expert advice in this string, would be twofold: (1) after you finish with the 1,000 grit, de-burr it by running the full length by cutting into the end of a piece of softwood such as pine to take off the most fragile of these teeth, then (2) use a ceramic steel (I know, that’s an oxymoron… but ceramic works better for most of us occasional users) to straighten the edge every time you use the knife. Make it a habit. To see if you have the teeth straight, drag the edge sideways across your thumbnail. You can feel if one side “catches” more than the other. Lightly run the steel over that edge until the drag is even in either direction.
Notice how I left out the shapton 1000 grit and 220 grit stones. Here is why: The DMT stones at those grits are cheaper, last longer, and stay flat forever. The shapton stones cut a little faster, but that doesn't make them entirely better. I've had my set of shapton glass stones for about 3 years now and sharpening almost every other day has led to the 1000 grit stone being worn down nearly to the glass on back side. All the other stones are fine for a few more years. There is no doubt that this stone wears down faster than all the others, even the 220 grit one. at 4000 grit and above, however, the shapton glass stones are a woodworker's dream; really the best there is. With that said, consider the short list of sharpening tools I have suggested above. With all 8 of those things you should be set for many years of high-quality wood working!
Push the point you want to sharpen with your fingers. While keeping the angle and pushing the point with your fingers, stroke the blade until it reaches the other edge of the whetstone, then pull the blade back until it reaches the edge of the whetstone. This back and forth is counted as one stroke. Repeat it for about five strokes until you can see or feel some small burrs (edge curvatures) Then move the position of your fingers to where you have not sharpened yet, and repeat this five strokes of sharpening processed from the tip to the base of the blade.

Naniwa also makes the Naniwa Traditional line of stones, these are less expensive than the Professional lineup and I believe were created to compete in terms of cost with some other brands such as King that are less expensive, more attractive to some who are just starting and may not want to invest a lot of money. I have tried the Naniwa Traditional 220, 1,000 and 2,000 grit stones and I thoroughly enjoyed them, so if you are considering a less expensive brand to get started, these are also good. I do not like them as much as the Professional line but I do like them, they work, they make the knives sharp.
